Obituary for Mary Frances Cox

Ms. Mary Frances Cox (Shotgun Mary), 66, died Monday, March 28, 2022, at Vidant Medical Center, surrounded by her family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, May 6, at 11:00 am at St. Peter’s Catholic Church. Visitation will be in the atrium of the church at 10am.

Ms. Cox, a native of Pitt County, lived most of her life in Greenville. She attended J.H. Rose High School and worked at various establishments around Greenville including the family business of Hardee Cox Welding Shop. She assisted various law enforcement agencies with some active and cold cases.

She was a great lover of animals and always had dogs and cats around her. Many knew her for her multitude of cats. And who could forget her beloved Rottweiler, Rainer trying to jump up on you (sometimes with much misgiving) when you came to Mary’s house. Rainer was her hero as he woke her from sleep when her house was on fire.

Her granddaughter, Haley, and Doberman, Payton, were the pride and joy of her life. Mary lived her life to the fullest and always on her terms.

Although Mary never had a lot, she was always thinking of those who had less, taking extra food to those neighbors around her that needed it, giving her “excess” to someone else in need.

Ms. Cox was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar & Natalie Zencak Cox, her grandparents Grover & Juanita Smith Cox and Alfred & Helen Collins Zencak and nieces, Stephanie Beaulieu and Stephanie Jackson.

She is survived by son Bennie Rodgers, her grandchildren, Haley and Alex, her sisters: Helen Mary and husband, Bob Uebler; Annie Beaulieu; Rosie and husband, Bobby Jackson; Patsy and husband, Bobby Gouras; Denise Cox; Mary Jo and her husband, Scott Driscoll; and brothers: Edgar Cox Jr, Denis Cox, Owen Cox, and Liam and his wife, Janette Baysden Cox. She was aunt to 21 nieces and nephews and great aunt to 19 great nieces and great nephews.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Saving Graces 4 Felines (SG4F, PO Box 4307 Greenville, NC 27836 email: savinggraces4@aol.com)

Love you, Mary. Happy Trails! Kowabunga!!!
